Activity 203: Publishing Systems (Facebook)

Facebook is a very famous publishing system in which people set up a profile. In this profile they add their closest friends, introduce themselves what they do? information about their education, personal background, current employment and what not. They then add different applications too describe themselves such as car enthusiasts application, fantasy football application, magic 8 date ball application and so on and so forth. One thing though is the lack of security whilst using facebook because literally anyone can use this and look you up.

Our task was as follows:

• go to the web site and try out the application for yourself;
• write a brief outline of how the application might be used for publishing in including any advantages and disadvantages you can find;
• publish your ideas on your blog as Activity 203;
• if you have time try out another application;
• then go and have a look at what other people have said on their blogs. You might want to comment on one of their messages if you have similar ideas and agree with their comments.

Activity 202: The Creation of a Wiki

Pokz14 created PbWiki by accessing the website www.pbwiki.com. This enabled him to then sign up for a wiki page online. That was easily done and pokz14 really didn’t encounter any problems whilst achieving this goal. The main idea for creating a wiki account was to the use it for Blogs in the future and if anything is new was post then his peers could automatically activate his weblog page.

Activity 201: RSS Feed

RSS Feed is useful because it enables us to view other peoples blog whenever we please and whenever there is something new on them.

We did this by:

• downloading a portable version of Mozilla Firefox installation zip file;
• we were then asked to unzip it to a convenient folder on our USB key;
•  the next step was to start the application and to update it [this caused the software restart];
•  we then were told to create a Blog feeds folder in our Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar folder;
• after that shift to the actual blogging by go to the tools/options menu, click on Feeds and subscribe to the feed using live bookmarks;
• we were then asked to go to the web page of each of the blogs in turn;
• follwoing that we had to click on the feed icon save the feed in the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar folder

and that pretty much summed up what we did.

Activity 104 Website Evaluation

The website that we shall be evaluating is….. www.soccernet .com.

The good points about this site are:

• The of images to give a visual view of the event
• The layout out of the site provides easy navigation to all pages.
• The ability to be a part of the website, very welcoming.
• The loading of pages is quick and easy

Bad points:

• Can contain to much information causing it to become overwhelming and too busy.
• Advertisments have little to do with the website.

Activity 103

My group and I explored the suggestions provided on the Good Design Features site. We agree with most of the suggestions, except for the one relating to screen resolution – we felt that a resolution of 640×480 pixels was too small for modern web users.

5-7 years ago, we would have agreed with the comment due to limited monitor technology, however, as technology has progressed, most monitors can easily display sites designed for a resolution of 800×600 pixels and up.

We found some statistics to support this at W3Schools which suggested that less than 1% of visitors had a maximum resolution of 640×480 pixels, with the majority of users having a resolution of 1024×768 pixels.

With this in mind, we suggest that designers create sites designed for the resolution 800×600 pixels.

Activity 102: Introducing Myself

Hey! My name is Anmol Pokardas. But everyone calls me Pokz because my name is way to hard to pronounce. I’m studying Sports Coaching Science associated with Computing. Looking forward to learning more about Publishing the Web. I don’t know too much about Web Design although I did Introduction to Web Development last year. I do though have Friendster, MySpace and Facebook.

I hope to learn a lot more about posting things such as pictures, music, videos and what not online and making different types of websites. Also I would like to graduate wit
